Parent and Caregiver Video Series

Parents and caregivers are an important part of the CAS team, and we believe YOU CAN effectively and confidently help your child at home!  This 10-video series provides practical, research-informed guidance to help you feel more confident supporting your child’s speech practice at home. Learn about CAS, motor-based treatment, home practice strategies, and ways to partner with your child’s SLP.

The content is grounded in our funded research study, "The Effects of Caregiver Training on DTTC Treatment Outcomes in Childhood Apraxia of Speech: A Randomized Controlled Trial," led by Dr. Julie Case at Hofstra University and Dr. Maria Grigos at New York University, who worked closely with 40 families to understand how caregiver training can support home speech practice. Presenters are Hannah Deschaine and Kelly Sullivan, two ASHA-certified speech-language pathologists with specialized training in childhood apraxia of speech who worked closely with these families.

Advice on Using This Resource

Throughout this video series, you will often hear the recommendation to collaborate with your child's speech therapist. Working closely with your child's SLP to align on therapy goals and communicate regularly about home practice strategies is one of the most important things you can do to support your child's progress. You may find it helpful to share this video series with your child's SLP so that they have a clear understanding of the information we've shared and how to best support you as you begin practicing at home.

As you watch, we encourage you to take notes and keep track of any questions that come up to bring to your next conversation with your child's SLP. Each video below includes an accompanying transcript and a short handout that covers the key points from that video, definitions of important terms, and suggested action items to help you put what you have learned into practice.

Finally, we hope you will come back to these videos throughout your home practice journey. As your experience grows and your child's needs evolve, you may find that different parts of the series resonate with you in new ways.
