The Brain's Speech Motor Network

Speech motor planning and programming are not localized to a single “speech center.” Instead, they emerge from an interconnected network of cortical and subcortical brain regions that work together to transform linguistic intent into precise speech motor commands.

In CAS, disruption within this network is thought to impair the brain’s ability to consistently generate and stabilize accurate speech motor commands.

How CAS Impacts Motor Planning & Motor Programming?

Speech isn’t a single event; it’s a sequence of neural processes that occur in milliseconds. In CAS, the breakdown occurs during speech motor planning and/or motor programming, not because of muscle weakness or paralysis. Children with CAS know what they want to say and typically have intact speech musculature. The breakdown occurs during motor planning and/or motor programming, making it difficult to consistently generate accurate speech movements. Understanding where the breakdown occurs helps us better understand why motor-based treatment is essential for children with CAS.
