DTTC Research Clinicians

Clinician Participation Requirements

We are proud to introduce a distinguished group of research clinicians who have participated in our funded study, “The Effects of Dose Frequency on DTTC Treatment Outcomes in CAS: A Randomized Control Trial.” These professionals have successfully:

  • Completed a rigorous 14-hour ASHA-accredited training course on Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC)

  • Been instructed in extensive research protocol

  • Passed multiple assessments of fidelity to the DTTC protocol through comprehensive peer reviews, affirming their proficiency and adherence to best practices.

Their intensive training ensures a thorough understanding and precise application of the treatment protocols of DTTC, and their accomplishments have been pivotal to driving forward innovative research in the treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Clinician Testimonials

Christina Iverson
My involvement with the PRACTICE study was both challenging and rewarding. The partnering of clinicians and researchers was a unique opportunity and has served to change my clinical practice in positive ways that will continue to benefit the children, families, and other clinicians that I work with.
Denise Santos Ford
As a PRACTICE clinician, I feel lucky to work with this incredible team of speech - language pathologists. This project has created a safe space for clinicians and researchers to learn from one another and continue to strengthen our work in the area of assessment and treatment of CAS.
Katherine Moy
Being involved as a community clinician in the Dose Frequency Study has been the most rewarding experience of my career. The guidance, training, and mentorship provided by the leading experts in CAS have been invaluable. I am grateful for all I’ve learned and am eager to share the insights I’ve gained with my community.
Jillian LeVos-Carlson
The opportunity to partner alongside amazing researchers was one of the best career experiences of my life. I received invaluable intensive training and mentoring in the areas of CAS assessment and DTTC treatment. It was incredible to observe the progress these children made while implementing DTTC therapy with fidelity. I hope that the field of speech pathology continues to foster connections for researchers and clinicians to work together to determine positive evidence-based outcomes for the children and their families.
Marnie Millington
I must admit, it took some courage to become a PRACTICE clinician because I knew that some of my most respected researchers would be watching me provide therapy on a regular basis! I am so glad that I put my ego aside and jumped into this experience. The training provided was extremely helpful. It helped me to answer many of the questions that I’ve had about DTTC and gave me new insights into this approach. The kindness and camaraderie with the researchers and my fellow clinicians have enriched my professional and personal life!
Maureen Neukirch
As a DTTC Research Clinician, I gained valuable training and skills to significantly impact the outcomes for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Providing the specific cues based upon the Principles of Motor Learning with knowledge of performance and knowledge of results feedback after carefully selecting the target syllable shape was an incredible shift in therapy planning and implementation. I could see the change in the child and my abilities in the study. At the same time, I was seeing the impact of using the knowledge and skills with my current caseload across diagnoses. Going forward, I will use my expertise to share these skills with other SLPs and help impact the diagnosis and interventions for children with CAS in a variety of therapy settings.
Megan Nickey
I am incredibly thankful to the team of researchers who spearheaded this partnership with skilled clinicians and experts in the assessment and treatment of CAS. Through intensive training, self-reflection, and collaboration available in this partnership, my clinical skills and knowledge base for DTTC intervention have grown exponentially to best support clients across my caseload and within our clinical practice.

My experience as a PRACTICE clinician has been truly one of growth. The mentorship and camaraderie that came with the training and process of research was a wonderful gift! The feedback and encouragement I received pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of, helping me overcome bouts of imposter syndrome and embrace the value of critique. I gained a deeper understanding of the research process, dedicating myself to something I hadn’t realized I had the capacity to do. Most importantly, I now count myself as part of an amazing group of women in research and clinical practice, a community that continues to inspire and uplift me.

As a speech-language pathologist and as the director of Progressive Speech Therapy, one of my areas of focus is bridging the gap between peer-reviewed research and clinical practice. As such, it was an honor and a privilege to participate in the DTTC Dose Frequency RCT. As any practicing clinician can attest, providing evidence-based therapy is no simple task and requires a deep commitment to quality. I entered into this study as an opportunity to reflect on the frequency of therapy sessions that I recommend, as well as to receive expert feedback regarding my clinical practice. Recording and reviewing my therapy sessions while receiving feedback from this star studded team of experts is an opportunity I will always be grateful for! I cherish the gems gleaned from this study and can see direct impact in both my own clinical intervention and across my staff. Thank you again for this opportunity!
Rebecca Linke
I am so appreciative of my time as a clinical researcher with the PRACTICE research study. The trainings, lead researchers and other PRACTICE clinicians helped me develop my skills and increase my confidence in assessing and treating CAS. I am a better clinician because of this experience. It was taxing at times. I spent a lot of extra hours reviewing videos, talking with the lead researchers and stressing about doing well enough for my participant. I was also concerned about doing well enough to make my part in the study viable. Overall, it was a rewarding and enlightening experience that I would repeat if I were fortunate enough to get the opportunity to do it again.

This project is aptly-named, because my journey as a PRACTICE clinician has also truly changed the way that I practice. Having spent several years specializing in CAS and (I thought) implementing DTTC treatment, I was floored throughout this experience by the continuous, eye-opening opportunities to hone my therapeutic technique and level-up as a clinician. At times it may have felt like ‘graduate school 2.0,’ and then some, but I cannot possibly articulate the impact this experience has had on me, and, in turn, on the lives of children who access treatment in my clinic. I am so grateful for the deep-dive learning and mentorship, as well as the connections I’ve made with so many brilliant minds in the SLP and apraxia communities!
Susan Smith
When I retired from a long career in the public schools, I was excited to have the opportunity to participate in the PRACTICE study. It has been an honor to work with such amazing clinicians, researchers, children, and families and I have learned and grown more than I would have thought possible. I look forward to continuing my work with these inspiring families, incorporating what I have learned and continue to learn into my clinical practice and education efforts.

Being a part of the PRACTICE research initiative has been an incredibly rewarding experience. As a clinician, the opportunity to collaborate directly with leading researchers in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and contribute to a randomized controlled trial on Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) has deepened my understanding and refined my clinical skills. The intensive DTTC training provided a structured framework for implementing the therapy, and the ongoing support from the research team has been invaluable. I've seen the positive impact of DTTC on children with CAS and gained confidence in tailoring treatment to meet their needs. This collaboration has enhanced my practice and fueled my passion for evidence-based approaches in speech-language pathology. It’s empowering to know that my work is contributing to a larger body of knowledge that will ultimately benefit children with CAS and the professionals who serve them.
